Transportation
Please keep in mind that for us to drive to Denver to pick you up at the airport entails a three-hour 180-mile drive (round trip) for us. Guests who find some kind of transportation to Summit County are always appreciated.
Two possibilities are 1) renting a car (pretty cost-effective if there are two or more of you), and 2) the Colorado Mountain Express service (you'll have to check their website for prices...they keep changing!). If you let us know, we can make the reservation for you and get you the locals' discount. The car rental option will give you the freedom to go wherever and whenever you want within the area. There is now a car rental outlet right at the Frisco drop-off point for Colorado Mountain Express.
There is free bus transportation service within Summit County, and the nearest bus stop is within two blocks of our residence. It is neither reasonable nor appropriate to ask us to borrow our personal vehicles and then put many hundreds of miles of wear on the vehicle as you tour the state. Keep in mind that if you're visiting during our busiest seasons you should make reservations as early as possible. Busy times include July and August, Christmas, and "Spring Break" (usually the last three weeks in March).
If you fly into Denver, you can avoid a LOT of traffic if you avoid rush hours. It's not unusual to find stop-and-go traffic on Saturday mornings going up to Summit County or Sunday afternoons going back down to Denver, which can turn a 90-minute drive into a four hour one. And of course, Denver freeways are always congested at traditional rush hours.
We have not tried it, but there is also air service into the Eagle County airport (EGE), the other side of Vail. The drive up is shorter, but generally, due no doubt to its proximity to Vail, the airfare is more expensive.
