Us on snowshoes

My wife and I snowshoeing in Mayflower Gulch the spring of '00

When does one discover that he or she is a "mountain person"?  For me it was early in life, but the discovery never led to a Big Move until I retired from teaching.  Having spent most of my time teaching school in the Columbus Ohio area (see the professional link), I was accustomed to other people tolerating my constant rambling about the mountains of Colorado, but it wasn't until I moved to the Colorado high country that I realized that here people actually understood, for they, too, were mountain people!

I am a native of Detroit, Michigan, but went to college at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and remained  in central Ohio until June of 1998.   At that time we followed our dream, and moved to Summit County Colorado.

My favorite pastimes are snow sports (easy skiing and snowshoeing) and playing with various computer-related things, like doing web pages and experimenting with digital photography and design. Color photography has always been an interest of mine, but somehow the toxic chemicals involved in it were never an enticement to go into the darkroom. I did extensive darkroom work with black- and-white photography, but, alas, I needed the money and sold off the darkroom equipment. Back in the '70's I produced three four-screen slide shows, but that, too, was hardware intensive, and the projectors, too, are now gone.

My wife and I have always been fascinated with mountains.  We moved to the high country of central Colorado after I retired at the young age of 51.  In preparation for The Move, we visited Colorado once or twice a year since we were married in 1983.  We took up skiing because we wanted something to do during Colorado's wonderful long, white winters.  Subsequently we have discovered that snowshoeing has much to recommend it as well.

I have always been an electronic gadgeteer. My interest in programmable devices began with the purchase of  Hewlett Packard model 25 and 67 programmable calculators in the 1970's. From that I graduated to a Radio Shack Model I personal  computer with a whopping 16K of RAM. I used it in my classes in school, and convinced the school to buy a few.  See the "professional" link for details.

I have a daughter (previous marriage, which also explains the demise of the darkroom) who recently graduated from the Ohio State University in Animal Science. She, too, is a skier, but due to school commitments spends most of her time in Ohio....poor thing!

Since moving to Colorado, I manage Wildernest's website for its homeowners' associations. For six years I also did security checks here in the condo complex where we live. But six years of that was enough!
